As documented in the 92-Back area, the Power of the Force (POTF) line was intended to jumpstart the Star Wars action figure line after it lost momentum with the release of (at that time) the final Star Wars movie: Return of the Jedi. The most popular part of the POTF line was the addition of the “value added” coins to the action figures. There are 37 known figures that were actually distributed in POTF packaging and coins. The fact that Kenner invited collectors to collect all 62 implies that they expected the line to expand past 37. Fifteen of the 37 were brand new figures, the rest were repackages of past releases. Collectors that wanted a shot at the entire collection could mail Proofs of Purchase seals to receive a “randomly selected” coin in the mail. The selection was so random that there was no guarantee that you would not receive one of the accessible 37 coins in return and, unfortunately, most did.

Over the years, the coins have been broken into five categories. The categories are based on know frequencies of acquisition. Category I consists of the the coins from the final assortment of 15 new figures that invited collectors to Collect all 92. Though technically Category I coins, the Anakin Skywalker and Yak Face coins tend to be more sought after and valuable than others in the category.  This is mainly because many die-hard collectors had already received Anakin Skywalker in a previous mail away offer and did not purchase the POTF version and, of course, there is the case of Yak Face’s limited distribution.

Like Category I coins, Category II coins were widely distributed. However, most collectors were not motivated to re-purchase these figures just for the “value added” coin, thus making them rarer and more valuable than Category I coins.

Category III - V coins were only available through the mail. Collectors that did not receive the retail accessible 37 coins, most frequently received one of these Category III coins, followed by Category IV with Category V being the most rare.

And, there is another. Though never advertised, there is a 63rd coin. Sound familiar? It is an overall themed coin depicting the hands and lightsaber from the POTF logo.
